Fractional CMO & Head of Marketing Services

Fractional CMO, Fractional Head of Marketing or Interim Marketing Consultant for SaaS and B2B companies that need senior marketing leadership but aren't ready for a full-time CMO — a clear 90-day plan, a measured budget and one accountable owner.

Marketing & Growth Audit — channels, funnel, tracking and spend assessed against a stated method in 7–10 days
90-Day Marketing Plan — priorities, budget allocation and KPIs you can hold us to, not a 40-slide strategy deck
Fractional Head of Marketing — hands-on, one to two days a week: a leader who runs the plan, not a report about it
Fractional CMO — strategy, budget ownership and team leadership across channels for companies with a marketing function to lead
Interim Marketing Consultant — full-time cover for 3–6 months while you hire, restructure or cover a leave
Agency and freelancer oversight — we brief, review and hold your existing vendors to the plan
A KPI dashboard and attribution you can trust, so the board report and the ad accounts tell the same story
Hiring support — job specs, interview scorecards and onboarding for your first in-house marketers
Flexible engagement: one or two days a week, a fixed-term interim block, or a monthly retainer with async availability

Marketing without an owner is just a list of expenses

Most companies at this stage don’t have a marketing problem. They have an ownership problem: search is run by one freelancer, paid ads by an agency, email by whoever has time on Fridays — and nobody is accountable for whether the sum of it produces pipeline. A fractional CMO exists to own the whole: the plan, the budget and the measurement, with a stated method for deciding what to do next and what to stop doing.

You will see the role called a fractional CMO, a Fractional Head of Marketing, an interim CMO, an interim marketing consultant, a part-time CMO or an outsourced marketing director. The title varies by company; the job is the same — own the marketing plan, the budget and the results, without the cost and the search of a full-time executive hire.

Three names, one job — and three ways to engage

  • Fractional Head of Marketing — hands-on leadership, usually one to two days a week. Runs the plan, the channels and the vendors. The most common fit for founder-led companies that have no marketing leader at all.
  • Fractional CMO — strategy, budget ownership and leadership of in-house marketers and agencies, three to five days a week, with reporting that holds up in front of a board or an investor.
  • Interim Marketing Consultant — fixed-term cover, usually 3–6 months, close to full-time. For the gap after a departure or during a leave, a restructure, or the months it takes to hire a permanent head of marketing properly.

All three start the same way: with the Marketing & Growth Audit. What the audit finds decides which mode you actually need — which is why we don’t sell you the biggest one first.

Who this is for

Four kinds of teams tend to get the most out of this:

  • B2B SaaS, roughly 10–100 people, founder-led marketing — the most common fit. A founder has been running marketing by default, spend has grown past what one person can judge by instinct, and the next step is a leader, not another channel.
  • Companies that already have an agency or freelancers but nobody to direct them — channels are being executed, but there is no single plan, no shared KPIs and no one who can say which line of the budget is working.
  • E-commerce and DTC brands scaling paid acquisition — ad spend is growing faster than clarity about margin, attribution and repeat purchase, and the numbers in the ad accounts no longer match the ones in the finance sheet.
  • Companies between marketing leaders — a departure, a leave or an open vacancy, with a plan that must keep running while the right permanent hire is found.

A fractional CMO is frequently the right step before a full-time hire, not instead of it: you get the plan, the measurement and a clear job description for the permanent role — and, when the time comes, someone who can hire and onboard that person properly.

What the first 90 days look like

Days 1–10 — audit. Channels, funnel, tracking, spend, team and vendors, assessed against a stated method. You get a written report with 10–20 recommendations ranked by effort and impact.

Days 11–30 — plan. A 90-day marketing plan with KPIs and a budget allocation you can hold us to, together with the tracking fixes and quick wins the audit surfaced.

Days 31–90 — run. Weekly priorities, vendor oversight, the first monthly performance report and a mid-course correction. By day 90 you have either a marketing function that runs on its own rhythm or a clear brief for the person who should lead it full-time.

Leadership first, execution when you want it

A fractional CMO directs; it does not have to execute. If you want hands-on delivery, our teams cover SEO and GEO, AI visibility, Google Ads, content marketing and conversion rate optimization, with dashboards and data analysis underneath so every number in the plan can be checked at the source. If your product also needs senior ownership, a Fractional Product Manager works alongside the marketing lead.

Where the plan recommends a channel we also sell, it says so plainly — you can run it with us, in-house or with another vendor. The plan, the dashboards and the accounts stay yours either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fractional CMO?
A fractional CMO is a senior marketing executive who works with you part-time or on a fixed engagement instead of full-time — the same responsibilities (strategy, budget, team and results) at the time commitment your stage actually needs. You will also hear it called a part-time CMO, an outsourced marketing director, an interim CMO or a fractional Head of Marketing; the job is the same, the scope depends on your company.
Fractional CMO, Fractional Head of Marketing and Interim Marketing Consultant — what is the difference?
A Fractional Head of Marketing is hands-on: they run the plan, the channels and the vendors, usually one to two days a week. A Fractional CMO works one level up: strategy, budget ownership, leadership of in-house marketers and agencies, and reporting to the board or investors. An Interim Marketing Consultant covers a defined gap — a departure, a leave, a restructure or a hiring search — usually for 3–6 months at close to full-time. We scope all three the same way: an audit first, then the mode that fits what the audit finds.
When is a fractional CMO a better choice than a full-time CMO or an agency?
Versus a full-time CMO: when marketing spend and complexity justify senior leadership, but not yet a full-time executive hire and a multi-month search. Versus an agency alone: an agency executes a channel; it does not own the plan across channels, challenge the budget or tell you when a channel should be switched off. Many clients keep their agencies and add a fractional CMO to direct them — others hire one before building an in-house team.
What happens in the first 90 days?
Days 1–10 are the Marketing & Growth Audit — channels, funnel, tracking, spend and team assessed against a stated method. Days 11–30: a written 90-day plan with KPIs and a budget allocation, plus the tracking fixes and quick wins the audit surfaced. Days 31–90: the plan is run — weekly priorities, vendor oversight, the first monthly performance report and a mid-course correction, so the plan follows the data instead of the other way round.
Do you only advise, or do you also run the channels?
Either, and never as a requirement. If you want hands-on execution, our own teams cover SEO and GEO, Google Ads, content, email and conversion optimization. Where the plan recommends a channel we also sell, it says so in plain words, so you can execute it with us, in-house or with another vendor. The plan, the dashboards and the data belong to you in every case.
Is ad spend included in the fee?
No. Ad budgets are paid directly to the platforms from your own accounts — you keep ownership of the accounts, the data and the creative at all times. The fractional engagement fee covers leadership time; any hands-on channel work is scoped and priced separately.
How much of my team's time does this take?
On your side: view access to ad accounts, analytics and CRM, a named decision-maker, and 30–60 minutes a week for alignment, plus a monthly review. On our side: 1–2 days a week for GROW, 3–5 days a week for SCALE. The exact split — days a week, hours a week or a fixed-term interim block — is set before the engagement starts, based on how your team actually works.
Is there a minimum term?
The Marketing & Growth Audit is a one-time engagement with no minimum. The ongoing tiers run month to month after an initial 3-month commitment — three months is roughly the shortest window in which a plan shows up in pipeline and cost-per-lead data, so a shorter term would mostly be paying for ramp-up you never get to use. Interim cover is agreed as a fixed term, usually 3–6 months.
Do you work with companies outside SaaS?
Yes — B2B services, e-commerce and DTC, fintech, education and professional services as well as SaaS. The method does not change — audit, plan, run, measure — but the channel mix does: a lead-generation business is steered on cost per qualified lead and sales-cycle length, an online store on contribution margin and repeat purchase.
