Shipping and returns in Google Merchant Center: store checklist

· by Digitelia 3 min read

A product can have the right price and still create a poor buying experience if delivery charges or return terms surprise the customer. Merchant Center uses shipping and return information to evaluate and display your offers. The practical rule is simple: Google, the product page and checkout should tell the same story.

Start with the actual customer journey

Place a test order for each destination you advertise. Note the shipping method, price, estimated delivery time and any thresholds for free shipping. If these vary by region, basket value or product size, model the variation instead of entering one attractive but inaccurate rate.

Google’s shipping setup guidance describes the available configuration methods. Use the ones your account and sales markets support, and review them when carrier or fulfillment terms change.

Make the return policy easy to find

Link to a public return-policy page from the store and configure the policy in Merchant Center. State the return window, conditions, process and any customer-paid return costs. Do not copy a competitor’s policy or promise free returns if exceptions apply. Google’s return-policy guidance is the right reference for the account interface.

Check for mismatches

Compare three points for a sample of products: Merchant Center settings, the product page and checkout. Watch for local currency, tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive prices, cut-off times, oversize surcharges and products that cannot ship to every region. Promotions should not contradict delivery costs shown later in the journey.

If Merchant Center flags an issue, identify whether the source is account settings, the feed or the website. Correcting only one surface may leave the mismatch unresolved. Our rejected-products guide explains how to diagnose the affected products.

Before you request review

  1. The destinations in Merchant Center are markets you actually serve.
  2. Shipping charges and delivery ranges match checkout.
  3. The return-policy URL loads without login or a broken redirect.
  4. Exceptions for bulky, digital or non-returnable items are stated clearly.
  5. A real test order confirms the displayed conditions.

Shipping is part of the overall Merchant Center setup. Once the catalog and policies agree, you can move to the Shopping campaign checklist. Our Google Shopping service covers both data quality and paid launch.
