How to set up Google Merchant Center for an online store

· by Digitelia 3 min read

Google Merchant Center is the home for the product data Google can use in free listings and Shopping ads. Creating an account does not launch paid ads. You still need eligible products, a linked Google Ads account and a campaign. This guide takes you from an unverified store to a catalog ready for review.

Before you create the account

Check that shoppers can open product pages without logging in, see current prices and availability, complete checkout and read your contact, shipping and return policies. Pick the countries where you can actually deliver, not every market you would like to reach. Product details and store policies must agree with what you submit to Google.

Use one stable identifier for each product or variant. If the store changes prices frequently, decide which system will keep Merchant Center in sync before importing the catalog.

Verify and claim your website

Create a Merchant Center account with your business details and website address. Google may verify the site automatically; otherwise follow the verification method offered in your account. Use the exact HTTPS domain shoppers visit. Open several product URLs after verification to check that they lead to the correct variant and are not blocked.

Choose a product source

Google supports several ways to add products: ecommerce integrations, files, Google Sheets, API feeds and automatic extraction from eligible store pages. A small, stable catalog may be manageable in a sheet. A large catalog with fast-changing stock usually needs scheduled or API updates. A one-time upload is not a synchronization plan.

For each product, check the ID, title, description, link, image, price and availability. Our product feed guide covers the fields and a pre-upload checklist.

Set shipping and returns

Configure destinations, costs and delivery times in Merchant Center. Add a return-policy URL and make sure the policy is visible on your site. A customer should see the same conditions in Google, on the product page and at checkout. Use the shipping and returns checklist before requesting another review.

Imported does not mean approved. Inspect the products area and “Needs attention” for disapprovals and account-level issues. Fix errors at their source so they do not return on the next feed refresh. If products are rejected, follow our diagnostic workflow.

Finally, link the correct Google Ads account, verify purchase tracking and launch a Shopping campaign for eligible products. Our Shopping launch guide explains how to start without mixing feed problems with bidding decisions.

Launch checklist

  1. The exact store domain is verified and product pages are public.
  2. Product IDs, prices, stock and images match the website.
  3. Shipping and returns match the site and checkout.
  4. Products intended for advertising are eligible.
  5. Google Ads is linked and purchase value is measured.
