Fractional Product Manager & Product Strategy Consulting
Fractional Product Manager for SaaS startups that need product leadership but aren't ready for a full-time CPO — a focused roadmap and shipped features, without the headcount.
You don’t have a product problem. You have a prioritization problem.
Most early-stage teams don’t fail because the idea was wrong. They fail because the backlog grew faster than anyone could rank it, the roadmap became whatever the loudest customer asked for last, and engineering shipped features nobody outside the building asked for. A Fractional Product Manager exists to fix exactly that: not more opinions about what to build, but a stated method for deciding, and someone accountable for the decision holding.
Some call the role interim product manager, product consultant, product strategy consultant, contract product manager, or product owner contractor. The title varies by company; the job is the same — own the roadmap, run the backlog, and make sure engineering time goes to the highest-impact work, not just the most recently requested one.
Who this is for
Four kinds of teams tend to get the most out of this:
- B2B SaaS, roughly 10–100 people, founder-led product — the most common fit. A founder or a technical co-founder has been running product by default, the backlog has outgrown what one person can rank from memory, and the team needs a Fractional Product Manager to own it without a six-figure full-time hire.
- AI SaaS and AI-native products — AI automation, AI agents, productivity tools, marketing AI, data and analytics platforms. The method doesn’t change, but an AI Product Consultant pass adds one layer generalist PMs often skip: prompt behavior, model choice and agent workflows are product decisions too, and they belong in the same backlog and prioritization as everything else.
- Cybersecurity, domain and brand-protection products — a narrower, more technical buyer, where a Technical Product Consultant who can read the domain — DNS, SSL, APIs, monitoring, abuse patterns — gets to a usable roadmap faster than a generalist would.
- MarTech and growth-stage SaaS — teams where product decisions are inseparable from acquisition and retention metrics. A Product + Growth Consultant angle means the backlog gets prioritized against SEO, paid acquisition, activation and retention data, not against product opinions alone.
Below 30 people there is usually no dedicated product person at all — a founder or an engineer carries the role by default, and it shows in the backlog. Between 30 and 100, the gap gets expensive: too many stakeholders for one person to track informally, not enough structure for engineering to know what matters most. From 100 to 200, teams are often deciding between a fractional engagement and a full-time Head of Product hire — a Fractional Product Lead, or Fractional CPO, is frequently the right step before that hire, not instead of it.
Two focused entry points, if the general audit isn’t the right shape
The 7-Day Product Audit is the generalist version. Two situations call for a narrower one instead:
AI Product Audit — $1,000–2,000, 7–10 days. For teams asking where AI can actually help, not where it sounds impressive in a pitch deck. You get a ranked list of AI and automation opportunities, concrete product feature ideas, an assessment of where AI agents fit your workflow, a prioritization pass, a roadmap, and an implementation plan your engineers can start on immediately.
Product Rescue Sprint — $2,000–4,000, 30 days. For a product that has stopped growing — retention is soft, the backlog is bloated, prioritization has broken down, or delivery has slowed to a crawl. A month of hands-on work: an audit, a look at your real metrics, customer feedback synthesis, backlog triage, a rebuilt roadmap and prioritization, a UX pass, fixes to the delivery process, and a handful of quick wins shipped before the sprint ends. Most Product Rescue engagements continue into an ongoing Fractional Product Manager retainer, because a rescued roadmap still needs someone to keep it from drifting back.
How the engagement works
Every engagement starts with the 7-Day Product Audit — a fixed-scope assessment, not an open-ended discovery call. You get a written report: product and competitive analysis, a customer journey map, a ranked list of UX problems, a cleaned-up backlog, and 10–20 recommendations with a draft roadmap. You are free to take that report and run with it yourself.
Most clients continue into an ongoing engagement, because a roadmap with no one accountable for it drifts back to whoever asks loudest. The Fractional Product Manager tier is 2–3 days a week or 10–15 hours a week of hands-on backlog ownership, sprint prioritization and stakeholder communication — some engagements run as one day a week plus async availability instead, depending on how your team works. The Fractional Product Lead tier adds team leadership, mentoring and cross-functional alignment for teams building out a real product function.
